Fix TikTok Couldn't Play Video Error

A ‘couldn’t play video’ error on TikTok usually means the connection stuttered or the app’s temporary files are corrupted. These steps reset the connection first, then clean out the cache, and finally check the app itself.

✅ Tested on
  • SystemAndroid
  • AppTikTok
  • Also works oniPhone too — the in-app steps are the same, but check for updates in the App Store instead of Google Play.

Steps

Switch to a different network

Pull down the quick settings panel and tap the Wi-Fi tile (here, Airtel_5g) to turn Wi-Fi off, forcing the phone onto mobile data. You can also toggle Aeroplane mode on for 10 seconds and off again to reset the connection.

Switch to a different network

Open Settings and privacy

Open TikTok, tap the Profile icon at the bottom right, then tap the menu (three lines) at the top right and choose Settings and privacy.

Open Settings and privacy

Open Free up space

In Settings and privacy, scroll down to the Cache & mobile section and tap Free up space.

Open Free up space

Confirm clearing the cache

Tap Clear next to Cache, then tap Clear again in the confirmation dialog. This removes corrupted temporary files without logging you out or deleting your drafts; afterwards the Cache line reads 0.0MB.

Check for a TikTok update in the Play Store

Open the Play Store, search for TikTok, and install any available update. If the app is already fully updated, uninstall TikTok and reinstall it to reset its core files.

Good to know

  1. Clearing the cache does not log you out or delete drafts.
  2. Playback errors on a stable connection are usually corrupted temporary files, not your account.
  3. If the app is already up to date, a clean reinstall resets the core files.
