Discord has no bold button: wrap your text in double asterisks and it sends bold. Triple asterisks give bold italic instead.

Steps

Open Discord in your browser

Go to discord.com in your browser and click Open Discord at the top right. Log in if asked. (The desktop app works the same way.)

Open Discord in your browser

Open the chat you want to write in

Open the conversation you want to send bold text to — here, the DelftStack group chat.

Type double asterisks around your text

In the message box, type **, a space, your text, and ** again to close it — here, ** TEXT.

Send it and check it is bold

Send the message: it arrives rendered in bold.

Compare bold, regular, and bold italic

For bold italic, wrap the text in triple asterisks instead (text). The chat now shows all three: bold, regular, and bold italic.

Good to know

  1. The syntax is text for bold and text for bold italic; single asterisks give italic only.
  2. This was recorded in Discord in the Chrome browser on Windows; the desktop app renders the same markdown.
  3. The blurred image at the top of the chat is a spoiler-tagged attachment from the demo conversation, already blurred by Discord itself.
