How to Italicize Text in Discord

Discord italicizes text wrapped in single asterisks or single underscores. Type the symbols around a word, send it, and the symbols vanish, leaving slanted text.

Steps

Send a plain message first

In a channel, send a plain message like hi. It posts upright — the baseline to compare against.

Send a plain message first

Wrap a word in asterisks

Type hi and send it. The message posts in italics and the asterisks disappear.

Or wrap it in underscores

Type hi and send it. Underscores give the same italic result.

Good to know

  1. The typing keystrokes are not shown on camera: the recording cuts to the sent messages, so the asterisks and underscores themselves are only heard in the narration, while the italic results are visible.
  2. Use exactly one symbol on each side; the symbols disappear once the message is sent.
  3. Retitled from the ranking title: the recording shows the Discord desktop app, not Discord Mobile. The narration says the Markdown syntax works the same on mobile and desktop, but no mobile frame is shown.
